Delicious Street food right on DeskLodge’s doorstep!
There was certainly a buzz, as we walked towards Temple Quay Market for a lunchtime street food fill.
Just a 7 minute walk from both DeskLodge House and our Old Market location the bustling Temple Quay street food market is a one-stop shop for your lunch break!
With options to takeaway or enjoy an alfresco lunch in the sunshine - with surrounding urban decor and harbourside views - Temple Quay Market is the perfect lunchtime getaway for both DeskLodgers and local office workers.
Noticing a gap in the local area at Temple Quay, market director and Square Route Events founder David Pyne curated a food market to cater for the ever-growing community of office workers in the area.
“The market was created for the office staff following suggestions, from the management committee representing all the nearby businesses here, who thought there wasn’t enough going on in the area”, David tells us.
“Bristol city centre is close but all you had in the [Temple Quay] area was Weatherspoons and Starbucks and that’s it. The local management committee originally approached St Nicks Market, who couldn’t take it on, I had worked on Big Green Week and Tobacco Factory Markets and that’s how I became involved”, adds David.
“The market was an immediate hit as there are around 10,000 people in these offices”.
Starting originally as a local produce market, ‘before the street food thing really kicked off’, David soon realised ‘people were not really interested in buying chutneys, they wanted lunch!’ The market swiftly evolved into a thriving street food market.
“The street food scene is booming”, enthuses David. “It’s nice to see it like this today, as last autumn we only had about six stalls (coming out of lockdown) and a handful of people, as many of us were still working from home”.
“Each week we swap over our traders and each trader gets at least one market a month. From July onwards I hope we can get more stall holders in as our capacity will go up. We have nine stalls today and should go up to 10-12 stalls over the summer. We are just letting it naturally creep up as there are more people around.”
Despite being next to Temple Meads Station the market thrives on office workers alone, with passing commuters being a bonus to the foodie traders.
The food selection is vast, with each stall offering something completely different to the next; from gourmet kebabs to Chinese dim sum, falafel wraps, sweet French treats, mouthwatering vegan burgers and not forgetting serious steak sandwiches for those meat eaters!
The market alternates each week with different traders selling their sumptuous treats, there is so much on offer you could literally try something new each week for the next year! The portions are more than generous too and the indie stall holders are super friendly.
Whether you are a quick pop along and take back to the office type or more into going for some grub and a lunchtime hangout with your colleagues on a sunny day, the market has something for everyone.
A cheeky tip from the market curators - for workers on a short time limit - Get to the market after 1pm to avoid the early queues!
The only difficult thing you need to do is to choose what on earth you are going to eat first!
Pop over this Thursday, fill your belly and support local indie foodie businesses.
