Simon Quick works for Teach First, a truly incredible charity that trains and supports teachers working in the poorest areas in the UK. Take a moment or two to get to Simon (and his DeskLodge dog Barney) a bit better. From the best thing about his job, to his favourite place to work at DeskLodge, to how he keeps motivated.
What do you/your company do?
Teach First is a charity that trains and supports talented teachers and equips school leaders working in some of the poorest areas in the country – to give children with the fewest opportunities access to a great education.
I work in our contracts and procurement team ensuring we get value for money as a charity and are meeting our contractual obligations. Barney is chief treat eater in the Bristol office!
What is the best thing about your job?
There’s always something new to be working on and challenges to overcome. When we get the opportunity to step back and see the impact on our work, it’s great to know that I’ve played a small part in it!
How do you stay motivated and productive?
Music! I hate silence so if I need to focus on something the headphones go on and the volume goes up.
Where is your favourite place to work at DeskLodge?
I tend to stay within our office in Desklodge House, we’re in the corner so have two walls of windows so loads of natural light. When I do get to escape the office I tend to explore all the little nooks for ‘phone calls.
What's the most valuable piece of advice you've been given in work/business?
I had a great line manager who would regularly asked me ‘who is going to die if you don’t send that email tonight?’ (maybe a little bleak!) but taught me the value of work life balance. Sometimes it’s more important to log off and spend quality time away from work rather than chase that budget forecast!
What do you do in your spare time?
I prefer to be out and about as much as possible. Barney’s a great excuse to head off and explore new places.
