We're a B-Corp!

March is B-Corp month, with many celebrations taking place throughout the city.

There’s been a flurry of Bristol companies gaining B-Corp status recently, which involves pledging and displaying their commitment to people and the planet, in addition to profit.

After a fun journey of going through the process, learning new things and making some positive changes, we are delighted to be one of the latest Bristol businesses to gain the prestigious certification. 🎉

We've always wanted to do the right thing and be more than just another business, that just comes natural to us. Treating people, the environment right and trying to give back and help others has always been at the core of what we do.

But now to be recognised for that and to be measured for it, means we have something we can really be proud off as a team, and know we're actually pretty good at doing it.

Tom Ball, our founder has a passion for looking after people, and things. Which started young and at home. He says:

“My parents were passionate about the environment and taught me the importance of reuse, repurpose and recycle, I’ve always sought to embed those values into the foundations of what we do.

For example, when we grew DeskLodge from Old Market to our flagship space in Redcliffe Way it would have been far cheaper and easier to throw everything away, instead of paying a team to meticulously deconstruct everything, pay for storage and then reconstruct it.

But, doing the right thing by people and the planet is important, even when you think that nobody’s watching.

It also meant that when we opened our latest space in Beacon Tower, The Tardis - a much-loved silent working area in Old Market (our first space in Bristol) made a welcome return.

With wind in our sails, the whole team led by Hayley Matheou worked together to tackle the B-Corp assessment with the aim to become a certified B-Corp company - which we achieved in 2023. DeskLodge believes that businesses have a responsibility to have a positive impact. Becoming a B-Corp formalises that commitment. Throughout our journey, we have always strived to create a workspace that fosters collaboration, creativity, and sustainability. We have implemented eco-friendly practices, supported local communities, and prioritised the well-being of our members.

 And it’s paid off. First, we won the industry ESG award from the Flexible Space Association for our achievements, and now we’ve had our efforts officially recognised with B-Corp status."

We were also named one of the Sunday Times Top 10 Places to Work. And named the 53rd happiest workplace in the world out of 60,000 nominations - and the only UK shared workspace in the top 100!

Among the Bristol businesses who have recently joined the B-Hive, many of them are friends or suppliers of DeskLodge. Neighbourly, Truestart and Caleno to name a few. 🤝

Over the last year we’ve sought to harness everything we did instinctively and formalise it into written environmental and social goals, processes and guides and make our accomplishments measurable. So each year we can build on our experiences and continue to improve in making a positive change.

We're excited to continue to champion people the planet and doing the right thing and to work with and meet other people and businesses who have a passion for doing the same. Now we've have a benchmark, we have something to work on to ensure we reach even higher heights as a team and business to keep making a difference and impact.
