The wonderfully named Melody Sylvestre is certain to be top of the pecking order. That’s because she’s a software engineer responsible for Nando’s! That’s right, she rules the roost when it comes to everything online for the chicken giant. Discover why she loves her job, her favourite work space in DeskLodge, and how she avoids getting in a flap. (Ok, ok, that’s the end of the amazing chicken puns. The rest are poultry.)
• What do you/your company do?
I am a software engineer at Nando's, the famous peri-peri chicken restaurant chain. I work on the website for Nando's staff, so that they have access to all the information and tools they need.
• What is the best thing about your job?
I love the fact that it is mentally stimulating. There is always anew problem to solve, a new piece of software to create or a new skill to learn. I also feel very lucky to work with my team as everyone is very friendly and helpful, and I could not have dreamt of a better place to start my new career.
• How do you stay motivated and productive?
As a remote worker, I find it very demotivating to work from home all the time, so coming to the DeskLodge is really helpful. I am also a big fan of to-do lists to keep track of what I'm doing and organize my time. I like working with a good playlist, it always beats any "motivation slumps".
• Where is your favourite place to work at DeskLodge?
I always work in the Alice in Wonderland space. It is quiet, convenient (with the extra screens), and I like the whimsical decoration.
• What's the most valuable piece of advice you've been given in work/business?
Be lazy! Or less controversially: "Think about simple solutions or small changes first, because they can achieve a lot. Sophisticated ideas or big plans are not necessarily better."
• What do you do in your spare time?
I sing with my choir (Bristol A Cappella) and I try to find time to sew or crochet!
