Speech Time

Details

Meet + Speak clubs are a supportive space for women to take to their feet and find their voices.

The aim of these workshops is to encourage more women to speak in public, and we all have a personal goal. For some of us it is to speak at a Girl Geeks meeting, or to lead a presentation at work, while others want to be confident delivering upcoming conference speeches.

For our last session we will all take to the floor and give a prepared speech to the group.

As usual, we will be giving each other helpful feedback to help us learn and improve.

But before we do that, we will warm up with some improv exercises to boost the fun factor.

To cover our costs there will be a small charge of £10 per workshop (£5 for students), payable on the night. But, in line with Women's Tech Hub, we will be offering one free place at each workshop for the unwaged. Please message us if you are interested in coming along but for any reason can't afford to pay.

Workshop Wednesdays - Women's Tech Hub

We have been discussing this for quite a while now and finally are getting it off the ground. Weirdly we can only pronounce it with a games programme style delivery – its …. “Workshop Wednesdays!” (sounding like captain cavemen the cartoon character).

So the plan is – that it will take place once every other week in the new DeskLodge House on the 3rd floor from 6 – 9pm.

There are two large areas for coworking/peer supported learning in a very similar remit to that of Codehub. There are also a series of rooms in which we can do training shared projects or talks, these can host from 6 to 16 people and we are open to people contacting us if you wish to run something. The idea is that we may have one group learning a CRM such as salesforce for example, another running a UX group, then a python group etc. The overall theme will be about collaborations and its mainly for mixed groups but some may be women only as its a WTHub initiative and we are aware that women learn better in women only environments.

We are looking for sponsor companies to support us with pizzas and drinks in return for an opportunity to present and communicate either as an engagement or a recruitment piece. Women’s Tech Hub runs a no recruiter (other than an internal sponsor recruiter as noted above) and a strict social media policy which you can find in our Code of Conduct, the meetup is open to everyone (yes that includes men) so please join up and sign up if you want to come along.

Pitching Yourself, Your Business, Or Your Idea

Details

Meet & Speak clubs are a supportive space for women to take to their feet and find their voices.

Do you need to attract new customers to your business or attract funding for your growing venture? Or maybe you want to raise your personal profile by speaking at an industry event, or promote yourself as perfect for a new job or role?

If so, you need to tell a compelling story and make an emotional connection with your audience.

We look at building a narrative that includes all the elements needed to make an impact and get the desired ‘win’.

We split into two groups to prepare our own brief pitches.

After a break to boost our energy, we practice presenting our pitches, and learn how to give helpful feedback to help each other improve.

We learn how to deal with questions from the audience without losing focus or taking up too much time.

We also have a bit of fun with tech, for those of us who have yet to master the art of delivering using slides and talk about how to deal with computer/connectivity issues.

To cover our costs there will be a small charge of £10 per workshop (£5 for students), payable on the night. But, in line with Women's Tech Hub, we will be offering one free place at each workshop for the unwaged. Please message us if you are interested in coming along but for any reason can't afford to pay.

The Warrior Programme - Strength at our desks!

Introducing Amy from The Warrior Programme, who is coming in to help us with our strength and our desks!

wariiorp.png

Have you ever made a real effort to sit up straight, but then, five minutes later, find yourself slumped forwards again? Why on earth doesn't that work?!

Why does my back ache most days? I don't think this should be happening at my age!

Concerned that working long hours at a desk is having an impact on your posture, your weight and the amount of muscle you have?

Want to get stronger and tone up but no idea where to start?

At 12:30 on the 16th May, Amy from The Warrior Programme is going to be coming in to demystify:

  • Why sitting up straight rarely works

  • What you can do to get stronger and more flexible, whilst working 9-5 (or longer sometimes!) at a desk

  • Why you might be getting back ache and what to do about it

  • How to improve your posture in simple practical ways that work

Techie Brekkie | Using video & animation

By 2022, global video traffic will be 82% of all IP traffic (both business and consumer). What does this mean for business owners, marketers and content producers? As we are entering a ‘post-text world’, video is increasingly critical to our ability to win, serve, and retain customers. Those who use text to communicate with their audience will go out of style, quickly.

You don’t need to be a video producer or higher a costly agency to create professional looking videos that get noticed. Easy to use and affordable tools such as VideoScribe allow you to create eye catching videos in minutes that show off your business and drive customers to you.

We've asked our friends at Sparkol, a Bristol based software company and creators of VideoScribe, to co-host our Techie Brekkie and show you how to quickly and easily create your own videos for work, education and social media.

How To Ace Your Panel Performance & Handle An Audience

Details

Meet & Speak Clubs are a supportive space for women to take to their feet and find their voice.

At any industry conference there are a couple of keynote speakers and dozens of panel discussions offering plenty of opportunities for us step up and speak.

Taking part in a panel discussion may sound like an easier option than giving a speech, but we need to make sure we engage the audience, get our point across, and make an impact.

We learn some strategies and then practice by role-playing a panel discussion of our own, choosing a topic we can all talk about: ‘Women and Public Speaking’.

After coffee, we turn our attention to the audience. A competent speaker knows the secret to a good talk is to connect with the audience. To do that we need to ensure our speech matches their interests, level of understanding, attitudes and beliefs.

We take one topic and work in groups to come up with a presentation suitable for a number of distinct audiences.

And, to ramp up the fun, we are hopefully going to film ourselves.

To cover our costs there will be a small charge of £10 per workshop (£5 for students), payable on the night. But, in line with Women's Tech Hub, we will be offering one free place at each workshop for the unwaged. Please message us if you are interested in coming along but for any reason can't afford to pay.

We All Have Something Worth Saying

Details

Meet & Speak Clubs are a supportive space for women to take to their feet and find their voice.

The team at Ted believe that anyone who has an idea worth sharing is capable of giving a powerful talk. We second that. We want to listen to a genuine person sharing what they’re passionate about. So what lights your fire? If you had to spend the next three years talking about just one topic, what would you chose?

We work together to discover what we know that is worth talking about?

From focusing on what we say, we turn to how we say it.

Most of us hate the sound of our own voice, do you think you sound like Mickey (or Minnie) Mouse or have what Mary Portas calls ‘goat voice’?

But does our voice affect how people view us? Do people really make judgements about our potential, competence and confidence based on the sound of our voices?

We tackle the issue head on by recording ourselves talking and then we look at how actors and speakers use their voices and learn and practice some simple vocal training hacks and exercises to help us.

To cover our costs there will be a small charge of £10 per workshop (£5 for students), payable on the night. But, in line with Women's Tech Hub, we will be offering one free place at each workshop for the unwaged. Please message us if you are interested in coming along but for any reason can't afford to pay.

The South West Tech Careers Fair

The Bristol and South West tech industry is currently booming and we’re all aware that finding talent and keeping them has never been so difficult. We also know that careers change, people can learn and there’s a wealth of amazing people in the area who simply didn’t take up tech as an option. That, along with a variety of Universities, Colleges and training establishments in the area all creating talented tech graduates who we would love to stay in the region.

With all of this in mind we decided that we could help sort out some of these problems by working together so with HBBWTHub and Desklodge we came up with the power of three, set out to curate a Careers Fair and named it Tech³Shed (everything is Bristol is called Shed so we thought we may as well follow the trend!).

Culture: How to build a winning culture as you scale

You are invited to an intimate lunch with Bretton Putter and other leaders of growing businesses to discuss the impact of culture on growth.

Building a culture that scales relies on a strong set of clearly articulated values. As you scale, your company starts to move away from a set of talented individuals and into groups of talented individuals, who have shared assumptions with which to solve problems. As a founder, your reliance on your team’s ability to make decisions when you’re out of the room can be the difference between success and failure.

As your company develops, so will your culture. Codifying your culture will not only provide your team with tools for decision making. It will ensure you thrive in new markets and help you attract and hire top talent.

In this session, Brett will share the unique approaches he has developed for building a strong culture. You’ll walk away with:

  • Practical tools to clearly articulate your values - translating your vision and mission from words into actions.

  • A framework for values based hiring and decision making, so that your team can begin to live your company values.

Bio: Brett Putter is a leading expert on startup and high-growth company culture. He is the founder & CEO of CultureGene, a company culture consultancy helping early stage and high-growth technology companies to prepare for and execute at scale. Before founding CultureGene, he spent 16 years as the Managing Partner of a London based executive search firm where he successfully helped over 400 startup and high-growth companies expand their senior management teams in the UK, across the EU and US. Brett published Culture Decks Decoded (November 2018) and is publishing his second book The Culture Gene: Leadership and Culture Development Lessons from High-growth Companies in Q2 2019. He is a board member of Runway East and is an investor in Seedcamp funds I,II, IlI & IV.

“Culture is how your team knows what decisions to take when you’re not in the room”.
