ExpertsTalks Bristol: Using Machine Learning for amazing e-commerce search

Have you ever wondered just how websites are so good at showing you exactly the products you want to buy, almost as soon as you start to type?

In this introductory technical talk, data scientist and EqualExperts associate consultant Thorben Louw shows how you can combine the power of a traditional search engine like ElasticSearch with simple Machine Learning techniques to blow your customers' minds and really impact sales.

Get an overview of how search engines have traditionally worked, and why search is so naturally placed to benefit from advances in machine learning. See how ML can help a search engine deeply understand e-commerce product data, figure out what customers are searching for, and how a technique called Learning To Rank lets you use implicit user feedback to automatically tune search results and make the best results appear where you want them.

See you all soon for this exciting talk!

(We are hoping to schedule the Blockchain talk later on in the year).

Be-Teams The Dream Machine

Be-Teams The Dream Machine

Did we really sink a chimpanzee in black water to make this? For the first time in the UK. Have you heard about our Dream Machine? Invented by us in Bristol, UK. The system that lets you control water with your mind…

Wait, back up, back up. That's science fiction or something I saw once right? Well yes and no. People have tried, but never like this, and never like what is coming next. So, one step at a time.

Warning. Long post, give or take 5 minutes.

What we have developed in our robotics lab (yes we have that too- that's where we came from and pivoted to make this social network to connect people to crazy fun things to do when they are young and healthy- and to talk about it plenty on our own app), so what we developed was to take a product actually made by other- and often used as a sleep monitor- a health tracker similar to what some of you may already have. This one is special in that we re-programmed what came out of it. And pimped it. That means we made the data do something spectacular. Something amazing. Something different. And fun. So why bother?

The Dream Machine is a system that might allow you to measure and train your brain in seconds what previously took years- to meditate without effort or time. Saving time, money, time, did I mention time oh and effort- no effort to learning- your brain does it, not you. Confused? So was my team when I first invented it. Until they used it.

The system literally allows you to control water with your mind… yes literally. It might even allow you to learn the skills immediately (instead of taking years) of meditation. How would this save you time, reduce your stress and build calm in your mind? (either way, it’s still amazing).

Ok, are you still with me? Stragglers catch up and re read and enjoy the pretty pictures. (Said with love as this can be a lot to take in- no doubt about that). We will be coming back to this topic again for sure so don’t worry- just know it’s amazing and really really cool.

Right, so we want to give you a game that's so extraordinary it will just be like, wow. Oh, and by the way, it has been tested in one of the largest science and robotics fairs in the world- Maker Faire Rome 2018. 100,000 people, four days, and the outcome was…… drum roll…… on that one weekend, over 274 engineers, game designers and suppliers of health monitors signed up to make real digital games for us. (That’s another story).

And so the story goes onto you. Imagine a world where you have your mind state is in front of you, represented by a big tank of black churning water, glistening and glittering, cos that’s what your subconscious mind is really like. Above the water is your monkey mind, your disruptors of your day, your monkey brain, your child. The so-called chimp paradox. Now, take a breath, no not literally- you’re not going underwater. But the chimp is, but that would be really sad and sick if we sank a chimp, right?

So, we 3D printed a demon and made it red, real red, with horns and everything. And then we took it to Rome, Italy, the most Catholic country in Europe, meters from the Vatican. In a convention of 100,000 people. And waited.

But wait, your job is to sink your demons and calm the waters of your mind. Do you think that will work? Will it have an impact on you or other parts of your life? Let us know what you think and whether you would be brave enough to try it?

And so we asked everyone, including of course the organisers if it was likely to offend. Every single person understood the allegory we are making and loved it. The story of you and how you’re so powerful you really can control water with your mind, And do you know the best part- you will never need to know ‘how’ you did it, just that you can.

What if I said you could win access to this now upgraded Dream Machine? Register-and you may be in a chance to do that now. https://be-team.co/Best regards always, Ben Bacon, CEO, founder and inventor.

There are two large areas for coworking/peer supported learning in a very similar remit to that of Codehub. There are also a series of rooms in which we can do training shared projects or talks, these can host from 6 to 16 people and we are open to people contacting us if you wish to run something. The idea is that we may have one group learning a CRM such as salesforce for example, another running a UX group, then a python group etc. The overall theme will be about collaborations and its mainly for mixed groups but some may be women only as its a WTHub initiative and we are aware that women learn better in women only environments.

We are looking for sponsor companies to support us with pizzas and drinks in return for an opportunity to present and commnicate either as an engagement or a recruitment piece. Women’s Tech Hub runs a no recruiter (other than an internal sponsor recruiter as noted above) and a strict social media policy which you can find in our Code of Conduct.

Workshop Wednesday 17th July 2019 will also house:

1 – Why do women tend to (over)apologize?
2 – How does this affect my self-confidence, self-esteem and how does it affect the way people see me?
3 – Can I get over it? Yes.
4 – Train your language and your brain into new set-ups

Speech Time

Details

Meet + Speak clubs are a supportive space for women to take to their feet and find their voices.

The aim of these workshops is to encourage more women to speak in public, and we all have a personal goal. For some of us it is to speak at a Girl Geeks meeting, or to lead a presentation at work, while others want to be confident delivering upcoming conference speeches.

For our last session we will all take to the floor and give a prepared speech to the group.

As usual, we will be giving each other helpful feedback to help us learn and improve.

But before we do that, we will warm up with some improv exercises to boost the fun factor.

To cover our costs there will be a small charge of £10 per workshop (£5 for students), payable on the night. But, in line with Women's Tech Hub, we will be offering one free place at each workshop for the unwaged. Please message us if you are interested in coming along but for any reason can't afford to pay.

Workshop Wednesdays - Women's Tech Hub

We have been discussing this for quite a while now and finally are getting it off the ground. Weirdly we can only pronounce it with a games programme style delivery – its …. “Workshop Wednesdays!” (sounding like captain cavemen the cartoon character).

So the plan is – that it will take place once every other week in the new DeskLodge House on the 3rd floor from 6 – 9pm.

We are looking for sponsor companies to support us with pizzas and drinks in return for an opportunity to present and communicate either as an engagement or a recruitment piece. Women’s Tech Hub runs a no recruiter (other than an internal sponsor recruiter as noted above) and a strict social media policy which you can find in our Code of Conduct, the meetup is open to everyone (yes that includes men) so please join up and sign up if you want to come along.
