Matt Crees from Stack HPC has the enviable honour of being our first DeskLodger of the Month for 2024! Matt’s a Cloud Engineer, and loves how varied his job is from day to day. Discover more about his role, his favourite place to work at DeskLodge, and what he gets up to in his spare time. Here’s a clue: he might just turn your dishwasher into a fighting machine! Eeek.
What do you/your company do?
I'm a Cloud Engineer at StackHPC, where I think our tagline summarises what we do well: The Convergence of HPC, AI and Cloud. In my role, I work to develop and maintain scientific computing systems.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love how broad the scope of my work can be. It ranges from interesting software development to low-level systems administration so each week feels unique from the last.
How do you stay motivated and productive?
Working alongside my colleagues is definitely the biggest motivator. Being able to bounce problems off each other and work together makes for a great working environment. (The coffee tap helps too 😉)
Where is your favourite place to work at DeskLodge?
I love the meeting booths on the first floor. All the different themes are very fun!
What's the most valuable piece of advice you've been given in work/business?
It sounds a bit cliché, but "there's no such thing as a stupid question" resonates with me. There's no point spending hours trying to remake the wheel.
What do you do in your spare time?
I build and fight combat robots. It's like the Robot Wars TV show, but smaller here in Bristol.
