Hi DeskLodgers,

Office workers form some of my most frequent clients, often complaining of upper and lower back pain as a result of hours on end spent bent over a keyboard and desk. I thought I’d have a go at tackling this problem at source, which is why I’m coming to you!

I'm Natasha (Tasha is fine too), I have a (BSc) Hons in Sports Rehabilitation and am currently working at a clinic in Bedminster. I provide treatment and sports massage for a wide range of people who have various injuries or pains.

I have experience working with a number of professional teams including:

I will be visiting DeskLodge on Wednesday 18th April from 10am – 3pm to offer 30 minute sports massage sessions for a discounted DeskLodger price of £10 (cash only) - in the Grumpy’s shed meeting room.  If you are suffering from any aches or pains, it would be very beneficial for you to book and give it a try! A sign-up sheet will be placed at the DeskLodge reception to book in and a basic medical form for you to fill and bring along on the day..

Benefits of sports massage:

·       Release muscle tension

·       Increased muscle flexibility

·       Decrease stress

What to expect:

-          Fill out a consent form and bring it to your session (Please find under sign up sheet at the DeskLodge reception)

-          5 minutes discussing your pain / the area you would like me to work on

GDPR Accelerator - Streamlining your Path to Compliance

FREE to attend Workshop by VXPartners and Thrings with Low Carbon South West

8.45am - 12.00pm, Thursday 5th April 2018, the Oaks Tree, Future Economy Centre, Bristol

This workshop is aimed at Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) who are in the initial stages of their GDPR review to equip you with an understanding of what a robust and defensible project looks like, and what your team should be doing.

The session is aimed at directors and senior managers who have a personal and legal responsibility for delivering GDPR compliance - however, there will be a brief introduction to GDPR nomenclature, and a top level description of the essential changes to the data privacy landscape so that everyone in the room has a common context for the sessions.

Graeme Fearon of Thrings Solicitors will discuss the legislative framework for the new data protection regime, including:

  • Identifying an appropriate legal basis for data processing
  • How to demonstrate “accountability”
  • Preparing to handle increased individual rights
  • Sanctions for non-compliance

Colin Jupe of VXPartners, a leading GDPR consultancy for SME’s, will outline how to adopt a pragmatic approach to accelerate your GDPR project in the limited time left, including;

  • How to start your journey - The importance of conducting a Data Mapping exercise
  • Identifying the real issues – Assess the greatest risks to personal data within your organization
  • Pragmatic problem-solving - Prioritise your activities to bridge the gaps in compliance
  • Demonstrating your compliance - Creating and managing your GDPR Compliance files

This is not a general awareness “lecture” on what GDPR means, so to get the most out of the morning - which will be interactive - you should already possess some understanding of the key issues.

If you need to refresh your thinking on the topic this is the Information Commissioner's Office Guide to GDPR :https://ico.org.uk/media/1624219/preparing-for-the-gdpr-12-steps.pdf

Please note attendance is limited to two spaces per organisation, if you cannot attend after registration please do let us know, so that we can open a space for your fellow colleagues in the low carbon economy.

Wellness At Work

Wellness At Work

Work-related back pain is a major contributor to working days lost to musculoskeletal disorders in the UK.

Official figures reveal that almost 3.5 million working days were lost to back pain in 2015/16, and a recent survey found that 38% of people in the UK claimed work caused their back pain, with 31% saying their work station caused bad posture and back pain.

As business owners, we need to make sure we look after our backs so we can continue to look after our business, and avoid working days lost to back pain.

At Core Strength Studios, we help people prevent and reduce back pain through specialist strengthening and exercise rehabilitation.

In this interactive workshop, you will learn:

·       The impact on your back of spending prolonged periods sitting

·       Simple daily hacks to minimise this impact

·       How to look after your back in order to continue looking after your business, including optimising your workstation to avoid posture-related pain

·       Core and back strengthening exercises to avoid the onset of back problems, or treat your current back pain

We will also have a Q&A for you to ask advice on any issues you currently have and how best to treat it.

This workshop is for anyone who would like to know how to avoid the onset of back problems, or anyone who is currently experiencing back problems and would like to know how to ease the pain at work.

Bristol Hack Night

Bristol Hack Night

This is a chance for developers in Bristol to get together in an informal social setting to work on projects, learn, and share with other developers.

If you have an idea of what you will be working on, or if you want help with something, feel free to mention it in the comments.

What is a "hack night"?

Hack night is a casual social coding event where people can come together to work on projects and learn new technologies in any language at any skill level. It is a good time to work on those projects on the "back burner" that you never have time for. Some people will have personal projects that they want to work on in a social atmosphere. Others may be interested in pairing up to work on a project or learn something new
together, or work through some of the online coding challenges. Some people may be experts, others may be noobs, and others may just want to learn how to code - all are welcome!

Previous hack night projects:

• People learned game development with three.js and phaser.js

• People worked on meteor.js and angular.js and node.js and Ruby on Rails

• People learned javascript on CodeAcademy

• Someone improved their functional programming by learning Haskell

• Someone wrote a test suite runner in C

• Someone played with node.js on an Arduino board

• People worked
through the Euler project and game coding challenges

Food & Drink

There will be Pizza, Beer, Tea, Coffe and Soft Drinks

Location & Sponsoring

This hack night takes place at Desklodge (https://desklodge.com/bristol-coworking-office-space) Co-working space and is kindly sponsored by Candide (https://candide.eu/)

The Future of....Low Carbon Skills - Low Carbon Business Breakfast

The UK is undergoing a paradigm shift; drivers for sustainability are now becoming the same as drivers for growth, with the government recognising that one has to go hand-in-hand with the other for future resilience and success in a global marketplace.

  • What will the skills and needs be for the continued success of the low carbon economy?
  • What will the jobs created by these opportunities look like?
  • What will current learners need to know about energy storage and energy disruption?
  • What can we embed in courses to reflect the required trends in efficiency in manufacture and use?
  • How do we ensure workers of the future are aware of end-life reuse?
  • How can we design for reuse or minimal impact - or both?

Join us at this free Low Carbon Business Breakfast hosted in partnership with Low Carbon South West and Skills West at Business West to hear opinions on where the low carbon sector is heading and share your thoughts in a blue-sky discussion on how we can ensure that the leaders, decision-makers and workers of the future continue to ensure the West of England leads the world in low carbon technology and skills.
